Prof Dr Thorsten Bach, FEBU, born in 1972 is currently chairing the Department of Urology at the Asklepios Westklinikum Hamburg, Germany.
Prof Bach´s visited medical school in Hamburg, Germany and Duke University, US. He trained in Hamburg and at the university of Mannheim, before he became chairman of the Asklepios Hospital Harburg in Hamburg, Germany. His clinical work is dedicated mainly to endourology, with a clinical and scientific emphasize on benign prostatic disease, including all types of interventional treatment options. Prof Bach completed the groundbreaking work and published the key manuscripts on Thulium laser enucleation of the prostate, starting to work with this system in 2005. In addition to all other laser systems, he was the first to use Aquablation treatment in clinical routine, starting in 2017, having treated far over 600 patients with this system so far. Prof Bach chaired the EAU Patient Information Project, was member of the German and European working group in stone disease and male LUTS, co-authored different national and international guidelines. He published multiple book chapters and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles.

Mr Biyani is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at St. James’s University Hospital, Leeds. Mr Biyani trained in General Surgery in India and Urology training in the UK. Mr Biyani main interests are in minimally invasive surgery, stone disease, benign prostate disorders and general urology. Mr Biyani has published his clinical research in peer-reviewed journals. He is a keen surgical trainer and has delivered courses in the UK, Africa and Europe. He was instrumental in developing National Urology Simulation Boot Camp for new urology registrars in the UK. He is also Co-Lead for the Cadaveric Simulation Centre at the University of Leeds. In 2019, he received the “Special Recognition” Award by Zenith Global Health for his work in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2021, the British Association of Urological Surgeons awarded him the John Anderson Medal for his contributions to Education and Training. Prokar Dasgupta, King’s Health Partners Foundation Professor of Surgery, is internationally reputed as a clinician-scientist, educator, polymath and 10th Editor-in-Chief of the BJUI.

He pioneered robotic surgery in Urology in the UK, and with the help of The Urology Foundation, trained and mentored several consultantsurgeons and over 30 fellows both nationally and internationally. He wasthe first to develop image guided and 3D printed prostatectomies, indentation probes for precise localisation of tumours and is Ambassador for the KCL Ericsson 5G Global health programin telemedicine. He was Chief Investigator for the world’sfirst randomised controlled trial of telerobotics and the only trial comparing open, laparoscopic and robotic cystectomy.

Twenty-five years ago, while at Queen Square, Prokar studied the role of C-fibres in overactive bladders (OAB) in humans and then developed a method of injecting botulinum toxin-A with a flexible telescope, the “Dasgupta technique”. International trials of the toxin led to its licensing for OAB, improved the quality of life of millions of patients worldwide and influenced National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines. In recognition of his achievements he received the Golden Telescope in 2006 and was appointed Professor of Robotic Surgery & Urological Innovation, KCL and Chairman of the King’s-Vattikuti Institute of Robotic Surgery. He is the 2020 recipient of the St. Peter’s Medal from BAUS.

He has made major contributions to the study of mucosal cell biology, focusing on receptor function in the bladder and targeted immunotherapy in prostate cancer. Chair of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre at KCL, he currently leads a large research team of basic scientists, engineers and clinician-scientists and has generated grant income > £70M from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, UKRI, EU, the Guy’s and St. Thomas Charity and The Urology Foundation. Prokar has 1100 articles, H-index of 70 with >800 papers, 35 book chapters, 6 books, >500 presentations, >300 invited lectures and 50 Visiting Professorships. He has been Visiting Surgeon to Maharaja Gaj Singh II of Jodhpur, India.

He is acknowledged as a leading educationalist, starting a successful BSc in Surgical Science at KCL and looking for the evidence underpinning simulation in operative surgery, human factors and patient safety. He developed the world’s first laparoscopic nephrectomy simulator, led the EU-MARS project of the development and validation of robotic surgical training and the only international randomised trial of simulation for patient benefit – the SIMULATE study.

He is a highly effective educator and communicator, editing the BJUI for 8 years, doubling its impact factor to 4.806 and achieving an Altmetric score of 1469. He led an international editorial team that revolutionised web-based publishing and the responsible use of social media. He brought innovative design, artificial intelligence (AI) the new open access platform BJUI Compass to the journal.

Prokar was elected the youngest ever, Hunterian President and served on the Associated Parliamentary Committee for Surgical Services in the House of Lords, UK. He is also known for his services to Charity, serving as a Trustee to the Prostate Cancer Research Centre and the Malcolm Coptcoat Trust. He is a mentor and advisor to the UK National Clinical Entrepreneurship Program. He has supported the careers of 15 UK and international academics, eight to Chairs. He has established multi-million collaborations with Universities in Europe, India, the far East and Southern China. He isthe Clinical Director of the ambitious MedTech Hub at St. Thomas’ Hospital with a budget of £110 million.

He was awarded the Fellowship of the King’s College (FKC), King’s highest honour, membership of the Academic Association of European Urologists, the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the Honorary Membership of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Prokar has supported BAUS in its core mission of education and research to enhance patient care. He has served on BAUS Council, Trustees, Regional Specialist Professional Advisor, Specialist Advisory Committee, Joint Committee for Surgical Training and examiner to the Intercollegiate Board. Nationally he is a member of the NICE Guidelines Panel and internationally he is a Founding member of the European Association of Urology Robotics Section (ERUS).

During the COVID-19 crisis he published BJUI blogs from Italy, China, New Zealand and South Korea, which helped the planning of surgical services in the UK and internationally. With a team of international scientists, he studied trained immunity against the virus in health care workers after injection of BCG.

Stefan Haensel works as a urologist and head of the resident's training program in the Franciscus Hospital in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was trained by professor Fritz Schröder at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 1998, he published his PhD thesis on the influence of SSRI's on premature ejaculation.

He is a former board member of the Dutch Urological Association. From 2009 - 2018, he was National Delegate for The Netherlands at the Société Internationale d'Urologie (SIU). Axel Merseburger is Professor of Urology and Chairman of the Department of Urology at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, Lübeck, Germany. He studied medicine at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany, before completing a residency in surgery and urology at the Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen, Germany, and a research fellowship at the Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, USA. Professor Suks Minhas is a consultant urologist and lead andrologist at Imperial College, London. He is an expert in male fertility and men's health including disorders of the male genital system and testis cancer. A recipient of the prestigious Karl Storz Telescope, an award given to specialists who have made a significant and lasting contribution to British urology, he is recognised as a key international opinion leader in his field. Professor Minhas specialises in treating problems affecting the male genitals and is one of the UK’s only dedicated andrological surgeons. Professor Morgan Rouprêt is 45-year-old and is currently full Professor (academic position) at APHP Sorbonne University, in the Academic Urology Department of the Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital, in Paris, France.

In his daily practice, he is particularly involved in the field of onco-urology and practices mini-invasive surgery and robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures. In 1999, he received his first recognition from the Paris School of Medicine and the urology prize in 2004 from the French National Academy of Medicine.

The following year, 2005, he received the gold medal AP-HP Prize and the Le Dentu-Renon Prize bestowed by the French National Academy of Surgery. In 2006, Rouprêt collected the Prize Auquier and the “Young talent” award in 2013. In addition, he received the 1st prize for the best European Urological Scolarship Programme (EUSP) from the EAU. In 2007, he won the prize for the Best Paper published on Clinical Research during the 23rd Annual EAU Congress in Milan. In 2011, he won the Hans-Marberger award from the EAU scientific office in Vienna for the best publication in a European Journal on minimally invasive surgery. Lastly, he also won the first Prize at the European Urological Award for the best challenger at the European Urology Forum in Davos.

In 2015 he was the recipient of the Crystal Matula Award which is the most prestigious prize granted to a young promising European urological academician. From 2007, he has been working in the national group of experts involved in the French national guidelines. In 2008, he has been incorporated in the urothelium group of the EAU guideline office and he is involved specifically in the non muscle invasive bladder cancer group. In 2011, he also proposed renewed European Guidelines on upper urinary tract tumours. From 2007, he has been working in the national group of experts involved in the French national guidelines (AFU). Dr. Cesare Marco Scoffone has been working for two decades in the University Department of Urology of Orbassano (Torino, Italy), developing a wide experience in uro-oncologic and reconstructive surgery, retrograde ureteroscopic and percutaneous treatment of urolithiasis, miniinvasive approaches to BPO, holmium laser treatment of various pathologies. Since 2010 he is Chief of the Department of Urology of the Cottolengo Hospital of Torino (Italy). Bhaskar Somani is a Professor of Urology and a Consultant Endourologist at University Hospital Southampton. He has been involved in clinically innovative patient-centred treatments. His research includes minimally invasive surgical techniques (MIST) in management of kidney stone disease and BPH, urinary tract infections, role of mobile phone apps and artificial intelligence (AI) in urology. He is the Clinical Director of ‘South Coast Lithotripter Services’. Over the last 10 years his clinical and research work has been covered by BBC, ITV, Daily Mail, The Telegraph and other newspapers and media articles on a number of occasions. He has raised awareness in highlighting risk factors for development of kidney stones such as dehydration, diet and obesity.

He has been a member of BAUS Academic and Endourology sub-sections and is the Wessex Clinical Research Network and Simulation Lead for Urology. He is also the founding member and President of PETRA (Progress in Endourology, Technology and Research Association) Urogroup and i-TRUE (International training and research in uro-oncology and endourology) group, a board member of European School of Urology (ESU), ESU Training and Research group, and EAU section of urotechnology (ESUT) endourology and Urolithiasis (EULIS) groups, besides being in the EAU Live surgery and undergraduate training committees.

He is the chosen representative for UK in the Endourology society and in the TOWER research team. He was the advisor to NICE Interventional committee and ‘invited expert’ to NICE Urological infection guidelines. He coordinates the largest hands-on-training simulation course for urology in the world (EAU-EUREP). He has published over 450 scientific papers, 10 book chapters and has been invited as a speaker, to perform live surgery and for moderations in more than 30 countries worldwide. He has raised a grant income of £3.2 million and is in the editorial board of 5 journals. Bhaskar is the course director of UROGRIPP (Urology Global Residents i-TRUE Postgraduate Programme), a modular on-line monthly urology teaching programme attended by 200-500 residents worldwide.

For his work he got awarded the fellowship of Royal college of Edinburgh (Fellow of faculty of Surgical Trainers) in 2017, honorary fellowship of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2020, Endourology society ‘Arthur Smith’ award in 2020, BAUS ‘Golden Telescope’ award in 2021 and Zenith Global health award in 2021. He is also the Editor in Chief of Journal of Clinical Urology, the official urology journal of British Association of Urological Surgeons.

With dedication, commitment and passion for research and teaching, he collaborates nationally and internationally sharing his research and teaching successfully across the world. He has published excellent clinical outcomes and his outcome and research translate into patient benefit.

Dr. Sønksen is Professor of Urology at University of Copenhagen and Chair of Urological Research Centre, Herlev & Gentofte Hospital, Denmark.
Dr. Sønksen’s clinical research includes ejaculatory and erectile dysfunction, male infertility, lower urinary tract dysfunction as well as urological cancers. He has published more than 190 scientific papers and book chapters.
He has served as Secretary General of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) from 2010-2013 and as President of the Danish Association of Urology from 2016-2019. In 2017 he was elected as Adjunct Secretary General of the European Association of Urology (EAU).

Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Wiklund was Chair of Urology, Molecular Medicine, and Surgery, and Professor of Urology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he built a leading cystectomy program. He has performed more than 4,000 robotic operations and has extensive experience in advanced oncological surgery in patients whose tumor is growing on several pelvic organs (multi-organ tumor, bladder, prostate, colorectal, ovarian, and uterine). Dr. Wiklund has traveled the world as an invited lecturer and has performed live educational surgeries throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. He is chair of the scientific working group of the European Urology Robotic Section of the European Association of Urology (ERUS) and is an international member of the American Urological Association. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and 40 review articles and has been the editor and contributing author for four textbooks on robot-assisted surgery.

Dr. Wiklund earned both his MD and PhD at Karolinska Institutet. He is known as a role model for young investigators and has guided residents, fellows, and junior faculty to successful careers in research and clinical medicine. Dr. Wiklund organized the successful international fellowship program in robot-assisted surgery at Karolinska University Hospital, where urologists from around the world have trained.
